In 630AD Muhammad wrote to Heraclius, Emperor of Byzantium (the Hellenic Empire ruled from Constantinople), inviting him to eslem teslem or to “come to common terms”. Here, in one of the earliest surviving examples of the “common word” invitation we can see the written Arabic, English translation and a facsimile of the original document.

서기 630년에 마호메트가 비잔틴 제국(콘스탄티노플의 헬라 제국)의 황제인 헤라클리우스에게 ‘eslem teselem’, 즉 ‘공통의 용어로 오라’는 초대편지를 보냈습니다. 본 부록에는 아래와 같이 최초로 쓰여진 ‘공통의 언어’ 원본과 아랍어 번역본, 영어 번역본을 수록하였습니다.

The translated text Muhammad’s letter to Heraclius of Byzantium

마호메트가 비잔틴 제국의 헤라클리우스에게 보낸 편지의 번역본

In the name of Allah the compassionate and merciful,

자비로운 알라의 이름으로,

From Muhammad messenger of Allah to Mighty Heraclius of Byzantine peace on those who followed the guidance, hereafter, I invite you with the invitation of Islam islem teslem; surrender and be safe, if you embrace Islam Allah will double your portion but if you refuse on you will be [committing] the sin of being Ariuseen (cultic) Sura 3:64 Say (O Muhammad): "O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians): Come to common terms, between us and you, that we worship none but Allah, and that we associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords besides Allah. Then, if they turn away, say: "Bear witness that we are Muslims."

알라의 선지자인 나 마호메트가 비잔틴 제국의 위대한 황제 헤라클리우스에게 초청하노니, 바른 인도를 받는 너희에게 평화가 있을지어다. 이슬람에 복종하라! 그리하면 안전할 것이다(islem teslem). 알라와 이슬람을 믿는다면, 두 배의 몫을 받을 것이다. 그러나 제안을 거절한다면 수라3:64를 범하는 죄를 짓는 것이다: ‘성서의 백성들이여(유대인과 기독교인), 우리들이나 너희를 막론하고 하나의 말씀으로 오라 하여 알라 외에는 다른 신을 경배하지 아니하고 그 무엇도 알라와 비유하지 아니하며 우리 가운데 어느 누구도 알라 외에 다른 것을 알라와 비교하지 말라 만일 그들이 배반한다면 실로 우리는 알라의 유일성을 믿는 무슬림임을 지켜보라 말하라’
