AL 'AZIZ

One of the ninety-nine special names of God. It frequently occurs in the Qur'an. It means "the powerful or the mighty One."

Al 'Aziz is also the title that the Qur'an gives to the Biblical character Potiphar (Yusuf 12:30,51). The problem with calling Potiphar Al-'Aziz is that the term "Potiphar", [the name recorded in the Bible], is unmistakably Egyptian and likely authentic, while the title "al-`Aziz" [used by the Qur'an] is Arabic, and certainly not the authentic title of this man.
